A personal presentation style
I obtained my learners permit in early July. I picked up a few brochures at a local motorcycle shop and yours was one of them. Yours gave the best impression. The details gave me a sense that your course was well thought out, would be thorough and would focus on skill development and safety.

In spite of this first impression I called the different schools before making my decision. Even though I would have to travel further to take the Cyclelogics course I chose it because my first impression was confirmed after speaking with you.

In particular I d like to comment on your organization of the course and your teaching style; as a teacher with many years of experience I consider myself qualified to do this. The curriculum was covered and the presentation style was personable.

The classroom training experience was pleasant Your pace and style of presentation put students at ease. Changing gears frequently, from lecture to discussion to a short video, etc. kept things interesting. Over the course of the two evenings of theory a lot of material was covered and it was done in an organized and thorough manner. All questions were accepted and treated as serious. When individuals didn't understand a concept after the first explanation you found a different approach to get the idea across.

In the parking lot your demonstrations and explanations were clear. As we practiced you observed us carefully and then gave advice in small increments and sent us off to practice some more. You displayed that you have patience and recognize that different people learn in different ways and at different rates. The great variety of maneuvers we were asked to do allowed us to be thoroughly prepared for the skills test.

You made sure we were well prepared before we began the traffic portion of the training. You took us through all of the different areas we would encounter in our riding. Your strategy of demonstrate, practice and debrief was very effective. Asking different students to lead and then doing a debrief as a follow up gave us an opportunity to learn from each other. I feel this got very good results.

When the morning scheduled for my road test came I felt confident that I had been well prepared. You took me out for a little warm up ride even though it was raining steadily. This helped me to become focused on the task at hand and it alleviated those feelings of pre- test anxiety. One key objective that you effectively blended into your instruction In the classroom, in the parking lot and on the road was the element of safety.

Randy, thank you for all you've done to make my return to motorcycling such an enjoyable experience. There is no doubt you get satisfaction from what you do, I feel privileged to have taken this training from such a skilled professional Thanks again.

P.S. I've bought a bike, a Honda Magna 750 V4

The bike could spontaneously combust!

My father had been a motorcycle rider, my brother has been one for over a decade, so it came as no surprise to my family that I awoke one morning with the "biker bug". 18 months and countless mishaps later I was on the phone with you, trying to figure out which of the courses you offer would suit me best.

I was motivated, energetic and eager; however, there was one problem that I couldn't seem to solve: fear. For all I knew the bike could spontaneously combust in rush hour traffic and leave me in the HOV lane to thumb my way home.

I can't thank you enough for helping me replace fear and insecurity with knowledge and confidence. Your varied and engaged teaching style, combined with your un abiding passion for motorcycling make you a truly remarkable instructor. I can see you had as much fun teaching as I did learning.

I now have a new dilemma: obsession. I think we should get this passion checked out...it's contagious!

Gracias, merci & dankeschon,

The more you know
I always read the letters from fellow riders and was shocked by Rick Baker's pointing out that in many states you can get your license after taking a training course on a 250cc bike without going on a road test. It's mandatory in British Columbia to take a learner's test and then a road test. The officials still are trying to improve the the road test.

I have been riding since I was 9 years old. Being self-taught, I thought I knew everything about riding. Boy, was I wrong! My wife wanted to ride, so when I bought her a bike I also signed her up for a private course with Randy Cook of Cyclelogics, which is much the same as an MSF course.

Because I hadn't ridden in a few years, I also took the course as a refresher. It was held over 1-1/2 months, two nights a week and weekends, and was limited to four riders, which gave everybody plenty of one-on-one time with the instructor.

We started with theory on the week-nights, and riding on the parking lot with cones during the weekend. As our skills improved, we moved up to bigger bikes — from 250cc to 650cc bikes. To further our skills, we also switched bikes to get used to different varieties.

After three weeks, we took the learner's test in the parking lot to get the restrictions lifted to ride on the street. We continued learning in a group, riding on back roads to learn the “proper” way to handle many situations. At six weeks we took our road test in a city with traffic and obstacles that we would come upon in everyday riding. The examiner followed each of us through the road test, and marked us when we returned to the start/finish.

The course taught me that this was the best thing that I ever have done as a rider, and it was worth every penny. I learned information and riding techniques that have improved my skills tremendously.

I hope that more riders out there, new or old, take a course. You can't get enough learning in your lifetime, especially when it is your life we are talking about.

He knows everything...

To whom it may concern,

As a firm believer in offering credit where credit is due I would like to acknowledge Randy Cook of Cyclelogics Motorcycle Training and to say a few words about my experience with the program.

In the full bloom of my midlife crisis, I recently decided to buy a motorcycle and get back to a sport which I had enjoyed as a youth in the 60's. By far the smartest thing I did during this process was to enroll in the Cyclelogics course which was conducted by Randy at the Pitt Meadows Airport.

Randy is passionate about motorcycling. He knows everything about the sport and combines these attributes with years of training experience to create the best training available in the Lower Mainland (in my humble opinion).

The program incorporates the expected classroom and on-road instruction but Randy infuses the training with tremendously valuable anecdotal information drawn from his years of experience. As well, the student is provided with comprehensive product information through visits to motorcycle dealers and perhaps best of all, learns about some of the best eating destinations in the area!

The course is comprehensive, exciting and fun. I cannot recommend Randy Cook too highly. He is thoroughly professional, an outstanding instructor and sincerely dedicated to turning out safe, capable riders. I consider Randy a true ambassador of the sport and urge anyone seeking motorcycle training to look no further than Cyclelogics.

Have a great ride and in Randy's own words...Keep your bottom on top!

It's not "good luck", it's "good skills"
I always dreamed of getting my motorcycle license and wanted to learn great skills before venturing out on my own. I was referred to Cyclelogics from a local motorcycle shop in Port Coquitlam and was really unsure of what to expect, but soon discovered I had made the right decision.

The course and training provided by Randy was incredible; it is a no nonsense approach and not a moment was wasted. Randy is a patient, kind and protective instructor and will let you know the moment you have made an error and teach you how to correct your skills in order to best protect "you".

If it were not for his repeated emphasis and patient reasoning on the importance of certain skills I would not have overcome my self inflicted fear and frustration of learning maneuvers such as tight u-turns and sudden stops.

The class size is smaller than a lot of schools I checked out and you get much more personal instruction time this way. I was having particular difficulty with a certain basic maneuver and Randy set up my very own cones, which took off all the pressure and let me focus and practice until I got it, and rejoined the rest of the class a while later with renewed confidence.

Any questions were encouraged and you were never left feeling out of place.  Randy shares his years of riding experiences and how particular maneuvers he was teaching us saved him from injury. It was these shared memories that continue to remind me every time I go out riding on extra ways to protect myself.

What I also really appreciated about this course was how Randy created these "moments". One of these was a particular ride down a windy country road that led up to the top of a hill that had an incredible view. Our class stopped for just a few moments to appreciate it and enjoy a few fresh blackberries that were growing there. It was these short but memorable moments that continued to keep us students relaxed and smiling which of course helps you to learn all the better.

The last class as all the student were saying their goodbyes, I waved to a classmate and yelled out "good luck on your road test!", Randy quickly corrected me, "it's not good luck! it's good skills", he was very serious.  This became very clear to me the day I took my road test I was standing at the counter getting registered. I overheard a guy ahead of me in lineup exclaim he was taking his road test for the 3rd time!!!

I went off shortly to do my test. As we started I realized I was not as nervous as I thought I would be.  I felt confident and prepared because of my training from Randy and from the generous 1 hour he spends riding with you just before your test. I passed on my first try and this was no doubt due to the "good skills" I had been taught.

If you want super strong skills and road smarts that give you confidence so you can truly appreciate how enjoyable riding a motorcycle is, take the course from Cyclelogics."

Good skills to all of you!
